So Close

My 1856 knitted opera hood is so close to being finished. If only I'd made my decision about color for the tassels and ribbons sooner, it probably would be finished. Now I'm waiting for the mail to bring my ribbon on Monday or Tuesday so best case is that I'll finish it Tuesday night. I want to wear it next Saturday so that should be fine.

Still, it's finished from the front so I couldn't resist taking a picture. Now I don't have a blank on the project in Ravelry.

Here's the lace laid flat.

1846 Scallop Edging

The blues aren't exactly the same between the sport weight and the fingering weight yarn, but it's pretty close. After all, the original pattern does call for two different yarns so I'm sure there were slight differences in originals too. Though that's speculation on my part, I think it's a reasonable conclusion. Plus the ribbons will cover part of the lace.

That used up three balls plus a bit of yarn. Now I think I have five balls plus maybe a half left. Except for the ribbon, everything I needed for the project I had on hand so that was pleasant, especially since it was all leftovers from other projects. I always feel virtuous when I make something that depletes the materials that are sitting in boxes in the closet rather than adding to them.

My ears were pleasantly warm when I wore it outside for a few minutes this morning. It was about 31F at the time.

It looks fabulous!

I should make some lace for mine before I wear it again :)

Yes! You need lace. It really does add just a little something interesting to what is otherwise a plain garter-stitched hood. I only needed four repeats of the pattern so it was only 112 rows with 8-15 stitches each. I'd have finished it in an evening if the pattern hadn't been screwed up and I hadn't had to try a couple of different needle sizes.

Cute! I really want to make one of these to double for historic dressup and modern/everyday.

I think you could get away with this one for modern wear. It looks like a number of people on Ravelry who have made them intend them that way, and I think I've seen similar things in other patterns.

I wore it down to the bus stop the other morning, and it was cosy, though I can't say whether I got any odd looks because the oldest person there was 10.
