About half of my time this year was spent cross-stitching, which takes a lot of time, but I still made quite a few things. I’m pleased with what I made, but I didn’t make my new favorite thing. There are a couple of things that I still need to get pictures of, but since it’s already January 10, I decided to go ahead and post this and fill them in later.

Beret

I finished the 1930's beret that goes with the anchor swimsuit. I happened to wear a dress that coordinated well on Sunday, which spurred me to take pictures.

1930’s crocheted beret

1930’s beret

It took between one and two balls of coral yarn and a small part of the ball of navy yarn. I used the given crochet hook size (steel 2, aka 2.25mm). I just safety pinned the pompon to the top so that it could be removed and fluffed if it ever got wet when wearing it with the swimsuit.

It's only a bathroom mirror picture, but it's a picture!

1949 “Going Swimming”

I love the chevrons and am really glad I added the extra length at the back waist.

It's still not the most flattering thing ever, but it's cute. I ended up not needing the extra yarn I bought when I got concerned that I didn't have enough and was buying yarn for the anchor suit. So much for choosing a color I already had a ball of in the stash so that I could use it up.

Three bathing suits in eight months is enough. Now for a 1920 tuxedo sweater.

Of course, I still need to make the bathing shoes to finish off the 1921 outfit (and I think they'll go with the anchor suit too).

I finished the 1949 chevron bathing suit last night. It looks really cute, though I haven't tried it on since I finished it. I did pin it and try it on when I was just below the back waist so I'm confident it will fit.

Waist

I've reached the waist ribbing on the 1949 swimsuit.

I pinned it together and tried it on when I got to the end of the 14th pattern repeat, and the center back did want to sag like the last suit so I put in another dozen short rows to lengthen it.

I've been time-sharing among projects this week.

- 1949 bathing suit: The back of the shorts is half-finished. I feel like this project is so close to finished, even though it's still got a ways to go.
- 1902 vest: I've worked on the neck edging off and on. I've still got two rows to go. Then I get to sew up the side seams and repeat the trimming on the armscyes and bottom edge. As long as I can keep devoting an hour or two over the weekends to it, I'll be satisfied.
- Early 1900's hat: I took an online hat-making workshop last Sunday afternoon. At the end of the class, I had a wire frame for a hat and materials to cover it. I've spent a couple of nights on it this week and am nearly finished covering the brim. I think the brim will be finished tonight.
- "Street Scene" cross-stitch: I'm on the third row of blocks on the sixth page. This page is exciting because there's plenty of non-background stuff going on. I'm very pleased about that.

So everything has progressed, though of course nothing is done. That's fine.

Halfway

I finished the front of the 1949 bathing suit last night. I also knit the gusset. I cast on the first leg of the back. Lots of fun progress!

I did a lot of needlework this year, but I didn’t make a lot of things. I liked the things I did make, but they were generally lengthier projects.

It was a much better year for events. There were several DFWCG events, and I went to Costume College. A friend and I even made our own mini-event where three of us dressed up, ate out, and went to a play.

This year’s projects behind the cut )

One of my goals for this year was to work from my stash. I was not nearly as successful as I was last year. The 1908 eyelet dress was all stash, but then the 1805 embroidered dress was all new materials. The 1876 dress was all stash, but the three bathing suits were all new materials except for a couple of balls of yarn. “Winter Lace” was stash, but “Street Scene” was new materials except for a few skeins of embroidery floss. The 1916 dress was stash, but the 1940’s dress was new materials. The stays, the nightcap, the vest, the Eleonora stockings, scarf, kerchief, skating cap, and flute décor were all from stash. The 1910’s purse materials were a combination of stash fabric and new threads. I bought wool fabrics for three dresses, wool yarns for two sweaters, and cotton yarn for a quilt that I haven’t started yet. I bought fabric and embroidery wools for an 18th century wallet. I bought some miscellaneous embroidery threads that don’t necessarily have a project planned. On the balance, I think that means that I had no net change to the fabric stash but increased the yarn and embroidery supplies I have. I shall have to try harder not to buy things in 2024.

I got my husband to take some pictures of my 1930's bathing suit while we were at the beach this past week.

1930’s bathing suit

1930’s bathing suit

It was only in the 50's so I was not willing to get in the water so you don't get lots of fun pictures like [personal profile] koshka_the_cat posted of hers. That also means I didn't get it wet so I can't report on how it behaved. It's tight and thick stockinette. One of these days I'll soak it in the bathtub just so I'll know how it acts, and I'll report here whenever I get around to that.

When comparing it on me to the pattern image, it's clear that the shorts and skirt are really a little too short for me. I don't know if that's just because I have a long rise or because I've got fuller hips than the pattern expected. I added two inches to the hips that I narrowed out below the waist, but maybe it's still stretching further than it was intended to and has to give up some length to get the breadth. The waist ribbing sits a little low, and the top edge of the bodice therefore also sits lower. I don't like the way that the back waist ribbing dips, though I did find that same feature in a period photo so it's less annoying than it could be. I will point out that the front and back are made identically up through the ribbing while sewing pants/shorts patterns are not identical. They have more horizontal depth on the back piece than the front piece and more height on the back than the front. Or maybe I just have to get it wet, it will stretch, I'll tighten the straps, and everything will be better. Who knows?

I'm trying to take lessons from this on the 1949 suit I'm working on right now. I did an extra two repeats (~1.5") on the front of the shorts. Once I get to the waist on the back, I'm going to pin the seams and see whether I need to add more at the center back to keep the ribbing from dipping there. It will be much more obvious on this one because the ribbing is solid green while the rest of the suit is done in green and white stripes.

I reached the waist ribbing on the front of my 1949 knit bathing suit. It’s a milestone.

Maybe having the back waist of your swimsuit not be level was expected. This pattern image looks like the back waist dips just like mine does. How interesting.

I finally got around to making the trim for the 1930's swimsuit and sewing it to the swimsuit on Friday. I didn't sew down the ends of the straps on Friday, but I did it yesterday so the bathing suit is now finished.

While it is not the most flattering thing ever, I like it better than the first one I made so that will be disposed of. Does anyone roughly my size want a 1935 knit bathing suit? I've worn it in the water, and with all the slip stitches in the pattern, it doesn't sag.

I was out of town for a wedding over the weekend so I started the first of the kids' Christmas ornaments. I got through quite a bit of the cross-stitching on it.

I still want to finish the bathing suit before I work exclusively on the ornaments, but I just haven't had time this week. It's been busy. Over the weekend I hope to finish the bathing suit. It just needs the cord for the straps made and attached.
atherleisure: (Default)
I did eight rows of single crochet around the top edge of the swimsuit instead of five, and with tight straps it will now provide sufficient coverage. I realized that with a stockinet bathing suit, you want it to be pretty well stretched when it's dry so that it doesn't become horrible when wet. Next up will be figuring out the straps. I'll get to those next week.

Seamed

I finished the seams on the 1930's bathing suit last night. I also did the hem. I tried it on partway through the seaming to make sure the fit would be okay, and the bodice is frighteningly skimpy. There are supposed to be five rows of single crochet around the top so I'm hoping those add enough to make it comfortable to wear. I will add more rows if needed. I started those, and I'm through 1.5 rows. Perhaps I'll finish them tonight, but I think tomorrow night is more likely.

I could have finished the bathing suit by now, but I was in the mood to cross-stitch so cross-stitch I did. I finished the fourth page so I'm 20% finished now.

I didn't have to move the embroidery frame so the picture was taken with the frame covering part of the image.

“Street Scene” Progress - 10/21/23

As a reminder, this is what it looked like after the third page.

“Street Scene” progress - 9/3/23

I immediately started the fifth page. I'll work on this and/or the swimsuit until Hallowe'en, and then it will be time to make Christmas ornaments for the kids. It seems weird to be doing it so late, but this is the first time we haven't gone on vacation in the fall in years. Ornaments always seem like such a portable project for vacation. It would be good to finish the swimsuit before taking a Christmas hiatus so I guess I should do that this week.

I knit all afternoon and evening Friday, a little bit Saturday morning, and off and on Sunday. I finished the knitting on the 1930's bathing suit. Now I'll have to give the back and gusset a light pressing/steaming and seam everything together. Then I'll need to experiment with the straps. I can't quite picture what they mean in the directions so I'm hoping it will be one of those things that once you try it, it become clear.

I joined the legs on the back of the shorts and knit a couple of inches above that. My goal for the weekend is to finish the shorts and be ready to join to the skirt. I think it's doable. It's only 46 rows. It's not outside the realm of possibility that I'll finish them today if I finish all my chores early. It's an away game week so I won't go to the football game tonight; that's good for knitting.

Dye Lots

My yarn finally came today, and the peach yarn is the same dye lot as my previous order. I was very pleased. I cast on the first leg of the shorts already and intend to work on that for the rest of the evening.

It's been a little bit good because I've done a dozen or so rows of my 1902 vest, which had been ignored in the pocket of my backpack since I started this bathing suit. Now it can be ignored again.

Skirt

Oct. 5th, 2023 05:05 am
atherleisure: (Default)
I finished the back of the skirt for the 1930's swimsuit. Since I don't know whether the new yarn will be the same dye lot as what I've been using, I'm stuck until the new yarn arrives. I guess my 1902 vest gets to see the light of day over the weekend. It has been sitting neglected through all the swimsuit fun.

I'm a trifle annoyed since I got a shipping notice on Friday but as of today (Thursday), the post office tracking still says they haven't received it. At least yesterday it changed to saying that an affiliated source has it instead of saying no information. Still, if you aren't actually handing a package over to the shipping service, don't send an email saying that the package has shipped.
