I finally started the buttonholes on my 1878 bathing suit. Three more buttonholes and nine buttons will finish the project. It ought to be finished by the end of the week.

Interesting! I haven't seen buttons pictured on a historic bathing suit. Thinking about it, though, I suspect they offered a way to a relatively form-fitting garment before modern stretchy fibers like spandex.

Here's an example of a reproduction pattern from 1872: https://repeatedoriginals.com/products/1872-bathing-suit-sewing-pattern-instant-download-pdf-1. Many of the fashion plates/period patterns have a dress or jumpsuit that buttons up the front.
