A long weekend with a good deal of travel is good for needlework projects.

I made the little laundry cross-stitch and all the buttons for my 1919 cape sweater. I started the first of the Christmas ornaments for the year.

Weekend Projects - 3/3/25

[personal profile] marianme already posted about our weekend here: https://marianme.dreamwidth.org/459361.html. I had a grand time. The travel was fairly smooth, and everything went pretty well the whole weekend. I didn't take pictures, but that's the norm for me. I'll refer you to Kim's pictures here: https://flickr.com/photos/7181690@N03/albums/72177720324115022/

It's the first time I've been to the ball in five years, and it was so nice to be back. I danced everything except the Minuet for lack of a partner and "Ely Waltz," which is a circle mixer. I'm not very fond of circle mixers, and they're a very inefficient use of the floor space. There were enough dancers to be a bit tight around the edge of the floor, but of course the whole center of the floor is empty. I suppose you could set up two sets in concentric circles, but I've never seen anyone do it. I wore my embroidered 1800's dress again, and it was quite nice to dance in.

I did a lot of needlework this year, but I didn’t make a lot of things. I liked the things I did make, but they were generally lengthier projects.

It was a much better year for events. There were several DFWCG events, and I went to Costume College. A friend and I even made our own mini-event where three of us dressed up, ate out, and went to a play.

This year’s projects behind the cut )

One of my goals for this year was to work from my stash. I was not nearly as successful as I was last year. The 1908 eyelet dress was all stash, but then the 1805 embroidered dress was all new materials. The 1876 dress was all stash, but the three bathing suits were all new materials except for a couple of balls of yarn. “Winter Lace” was stash, but “Street Scene” was new materials except for a few skeins of embroidery floss. The 1916 dress was stash, but the 1940’s dress was new materials. The stays, the nightcap, the vest, the Eleonora stockings, scarf, kerchief, skating cap, and flute décor were all from stash. The 1910’s purse materials were a combination of stash fabric and new threads. I bought wool fabrics for three dresses, wool yarns for two sweaters, and cotton yarn for a quilt that I haven’t started yet. I bought fabric and embroidery wools for an 18th century wallet. I bought some miscellaneous embroidery threads that don’t necessarily have a project planned. On the balance, I think that means that I had no net change to the fabric stash but increased the yarn and embroidery supplies I have. I shall have to try harder not to buy things in 2024.

I've been trying to work down my stash the last couple of years. This year has not been so successful. I made the eyelet dress from stash materials, but then I bought fabric and embroidery threads for the Regency dress. I made that dress, but since I bought extra fabric with a couple of other small items in mind, it's not a net zero project from a stash perspective. I made the 1840's nightcap from stash materials but then bought yarn for the 1921 bathing suit. It should use up some leftovers from previous projects too, but if I overestimated what I need, it might leave the stash in worse shape. I made the 1876 dress from stash materials, but over the weekend I went to a fabric store with my mother and bought fabric for a 1940's dress. At least the 1876 dress used 11 or 12 yards (plus a ball of yarn!), and I bought 3.5. The Eleonora stockings and the 1902 vest are both from stash materials, but I bought yarn for a sweater when I bought yarn for the bathing suit. I also bought the materials for the "Street Scene" cross-stitch.

Here's hoping I can spend the rest of the year making the projects that I already have materials in hand for. Ideally next year too.

I weighed the leftover crewel wools from my dress, and I really over-bought. Most of the colors had 17g or 18g left out of the 25g. I could have bought two 5g skeins instead of the 25g hanks. Only one of them only had 14g left and would have needed three skeins. That being said, three skeins cost the same as one hank so it's not a huge extra expenditure. And there I thought I'd be buying enough to get me started and would order more as needed.

I finished the 1805 embroidered dress over the weekend. I'm very pleased with how it came out and think it looks a lot like the dress I used as inspiration.

The fabric is the ramie voile from Burnley and Trowbridge. The embroidery is done in seven colors of Appleton crewel wool. I used stem stitch, chain stitch, and satin stitch. With as much time is in the embroidery I wanted to hand-sew the dress too. I didn't want to risk messing anything up by trying to machine-sew the sheer fabric. Plus, bragging rights.

I originally thought I would run out of the wools I bought, but I still probably had half of each leftover. I'll have to weigh them to know. There should be plenty of yarn for another project - I've wanted to make a flame-stitch wallet, though I might need a black or white or something. A project for another day.

All that remains on the 1805 dress is to set the waist. It’s exciting.

I finished embroidering the dress last night. Now I need to do a row of blocks on my cross-stitching (starting page 2!) before I finish putting the whole thing together.

Incidentally, for those who are curious, my 1902 vest has been making slow but steady progress. I have fewer than sixty rows left before starting the neckline. It sounds like a lot, but since I’m over 300 rows into it, it feels really close.

1805 Dress Embroidery Progress-4/29/23

Three motifs to go.

I was going to do one row of blocks on my cross-stitching before returning to the 1805 dress, but I got on a roll over the weekend and finished three rows of blocks, which finished the first page of the pattern. There are nineteen pages to go, but one page done feels really good. I did mention this would be a long term project.

Last night I got back to the 1805 dress and hemmed it. Now I need to lay out the motifs up the skirt and get back to embroidering. I feel like I'm so close to finishing the dress, even though I know it may be another month before it's finished.

I finished embroidering the hem of my 1805 dress last night. Now to do another row of blocks on my cross-stitching before I start the motifs up the front of the skirt.

I realized that while I didn't want to work my wrist holding the embroidery hoop, it was fine to work on sewing the bodice together. I cut and sewed the bodice and cut and started sewing the sleeves. Now I feel like I can get back to the embroidery.

Over the weekend I also did a lot of knitting. I finished the leg of my first Eleonora de Toledo stocking, turned the heel, and started into the foot. That always feels like a lot of progress.

Perspective

I was walking to put away the pattern I had been tracing for my 1805 dress and was holding it sideways. I suddenly realized that the motifs that go up the skirt are just a portion of the band of embroidery around the hem rotated through ninety degrees. I had never looked at it from that perspective. That saves me having to scale and print and trace a separate pattern for the motifs.

Brief Break

I am taking a brief break from my embroidery since my wrist has been bothering me this week. I intend to give it plenty of rest through the weekend, and then I'll get back to it next week.

In the meantime I've plowed through a few books, which has been quite enjoyable. I've been on a bit of a shopping spree lately, and it's good to work the pile back down a little.

I finished embroidering the back of the skirt to a couple of inches short of the edge. Now a row of blocks on my cross-stitching, and then it will be time to seam the skirt front to the back. There will be actual sewing on the dress.

Here's a picture I promised of my progress on the embroidery for the c. 1805 dress.

I finished the first half of the back of the skirt for the c. 1805 embroidered dress on Sunday and then decided I should do a row of blocks on my cross-stitching before I continued with the second half of the back. I finished that row of blocks this morning so I get to go back to the crewel wool this evening. After I finish the second half of the skirt back, I'll do another row of blocks on the cross-stitching. Maybe at that point there will be something in the picture to be worth showing.

The wool embroidery is fun. The threads are quite fluffy so they fill the space well for satin stitch or long and short stitch. I guess that's why crewel embroidery is what it is. It's good for other stitches too, but the full coverage stitches go much faster than I would have expected after having mostly (solely? have I actually embroidered with silk threads before or just knit?) worked with cotton threads. I'll try to remember to post a picture later.

I finished off the waistband on the c. 1805 dress and started the skirt embroidery. I haven't gotten very far yet. I am pleased with it so far.

1805 Dress Progress - 2/25/23

I also spent a few nights working on my cross-stitching this week, but it doesn't look very interesting so I'm not going to post another picture yet. I finished another seven 10x10 blocks, but it's still very much part of the background. Maybe the next row of blocks will get into the interesting parts of the picture.

I've done a fair bit on my 1902 knit vest as well and have about 9" of the front or back done. I'm planning to take pictures of my 1908 eyelet dress in the next couple of weeks so I'll measure then to see just how long this vest should be.

I've started the c. 1805 embroidered Regency dress in parallel with the "Street Scene" cross-stitching. I finished up the sleeve bands last night and traced the pattern on the waistband. It took four days to do the sleeve bands, which is better than I had expected.

Now I'll spend a few days on the cross-stitching.

I hate Regency stays. The whole lift and separate thing just does not work for me. The best ones I've got are still the old Simplicity short stays that really aren't all that accurate. And they don't work great; they're just not as bad. I tried with the Bernhardt stays and using the underbust line with cups, and they still don't really suit. Maybe if I add some boning at the sides...

I'm planning to try on the mockup for the embroidered dress over both the old Simplicity short stays and the new Bernhardt stays and see what works.

Why is it that Victorian corsets and Georgian stays are so easy but the nominally simpler stays of the Regency period are so difficult?

I have been really good about sewing from the stash for the last year, and I want to continue to be good about it. However, I succumbed to temptation and bought materials to make a c. 1805 Regency dress with lots of embroidery. I'm going to use the ramie voile from Burnley and Trowbridge and Appleton crewel wools. I bought one hank of each color because I had no real way to estimate what I would need. I'll do what I can with what I've got, and when I start running out, I should have a basis for how much more I need to order.

1805 Embroidered Dress Materials

I also bought a bunch of embroidery thread (standard DMC cotton) and a big piece of Aida for my next cross-stitching project. And [personal profile] nuranar bought a bunch of silk embroidery thread on my account at an estate sale. In my year in review, I neglected to mention that I bought some clearance silk embroidery threads in Williamsburg. It seems that I have embroidery in my future.

Speaking of the future, I finished the 1908 eyelet dress on Thursday and started a pair of the Bernhardt stays yesterday. I am planning to do a few days of knitting on the Eleonora stockings between each project (three pattern repeats last night!), but once the stays are finished, I'm going to start this Regency dress.
