While browsing a little on Ravelry today, I encountered the lace pattern that I was using for an attempt at petticoat lace. The difference? This pattern was printed in "Godey's Lady's Book" in 1888. It is duplicated verbatim in Butterick's 1892 publication "The Art of Knitting." I love the way that seems to have happened. The book also includes a pattern for a blue bag that was previously printed in 1872. It kind of makes me wonder what other patterns I'll find that have been pulled from previously published sources.

I found the Peterson's 1859 talma with I think just a one sentence difference (gather the neck if it's too big) in an 1880s magazine.

I'm sure there are loads more!

The advantage is that you can feel confident in your accuracy wearing things over a longer period. Maybe I should check the Butterick book for a "cloak knitted in points"!
