1847 Knit Bustle

I really don’t have a good excuse for making this. I was browsing Ravelry one day and saw the pattern and thought it sounded amusing. Plus I had all the necessary materials in hand. Naturally, I had to make one.

Materials:
1 ball DK-weight wool yarn (from JoAnn’s)
1-1/2 yd 1” cotton twill tape (from Burnley and Trowbridge)
Patterns:
The pattern was given in The New Guide to Knitting and Crochet by Mary Jane Cooper. The book was published in 1847 and is available through Project Gutenberg.
Construction:
I actually knit this based on the information on the One More Stitch blog rather than reading the pattern first. So I knit the pieces from bottom to top rather than top to bottom and knit them to measure rather than by counting rows. It only occurred to me after the fact that the book might be online rather than part of the blogger’s personal collection. That being said, I did choose to do six rows of ribbing and think I came reasonably close to 18, 26, and 30 rows of garter-stitch. On the other hand, I probably would have used ¼” twill tape rather than 1” twill tape if I had read the pattern first.
Thoughts after wearing:
Okay, so I actually haven’t worn it yet except for trying it on to take a picture, but I can see where it would serve to give just a bit more oomph to the back of a full skirt. I wasn’t sure at first whether it should be worn with the smallest piece up or the largest piece, but after trying it both ways, I decided it looked better with the larger piece up. Since it will be ages before I have a dress to go over it, I decided not to wait before writing it up and posting it. Anyway, it was fun to make, and that’s what matters most.
