Market Bonnet

I made one of those black silk 18th century market bonnets in January and finally managed to take a picture of it.



It's from the pattern in The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Beauty, but I scaled it to 80% of the original size. It's all hand-sewn and made of silk taffeta flatlined with silk organza. The brim is stiffened with posterboard. I decided I wanted it to be plain so I didn't trim it with ribbons, either purchased or hemmed strips of fabric.

Nice. Well done and pleasingly simple. Surprised at how smooth the posterboard brim is.

If yours is 80%, maybe the regular size would fit my giant noggin.

Thanks. I won't call my head a giant noggin, but I do find that most hats are a little small for me. I think most of them are made for a 22" head, but mine is 23", if I remember aright.

Why did you resize to 80%? Is the pattern that large?

The pattern is intended to be worn over a very full hairstyle - the hedgehog type of thing. I wanted mine to be worn over a more modest hairstyle so I sized it down.

Thanks! If nothing else, they're easier to store than full buckram form hats.
