Another 1940's Dress

Several years ago I bought some floral Swiss dot for one of the Vintage Vogue patterns. I ended up deciding to use a flowered silk/cotton voile for that dress, and this fabric sat in the stash. This summer I got the idea to use it for Butterick 5209, which I had previously made. With a known good pattern, it was quick and easy to put together.

It's flat-lined with lawn except for the skirt where the two layers are handled separately. I added a pocket that the pattern didn't call for in the right side seam. The pocket was such a nice addition that I picked apart part of the skirt seam on the old dress and put in a pocket there too. I would have added a left pocket too, but I just didn't feel like dealing with the pocket and the zipper at the same place. The bulk at the waist would have been annoying since it's an invisible zipper.

The pictures aren't great, but since I've had the dress for two months and never managed to take pictures at all until today, I think it's the best I'm going to do. Photography is not my strong point!

Really cute! And excellent fit! The one time I used this pattern was well before I developed my fitting skills. I should give it another try.

I'm lucky that the Vintage Vogue patterns usually fit me pretty well out of the envelope as long as I take 3/4" out of the length between bust and waist.

That's a useful thing to know. I have a similar thing with actual vintage patterns.

That's such a cute dress! I would never have known it comes out that nice based on the pattern envelope. Or did you lengthen the sleeve/make any other significant alterations?

The only alterations I made were taking 3/4" out of the length between the bust and waist because I'm short-waisted and tapering from a 10 through the bust and shoulders to a 12 at the waist. It is better than the envelope drawing. I think it calls for fully lining the bodice, but I flat-lined and hemmed down the armscyes and neck.
