Knitting Toothpicks?

I was reading a 1940's knitting pattern for a cabled sock last night and was highly amused that it told you to let three stitches off onto a toothpick as part of the cable. No spare needles for this author!

Must have been a pretty small gauge!

I think it was 11 stitches to the inch.

Haha! Seems like a very wartime, make-do mentality.

It does, doesn't it? I think the book was published in 1947, but who knows when that particular pattern was written?
