1838 Knit Garters

With the three solid days of costuming at Dress U coming up, I decided I needed at least one more pair of garters. Since I’ll be wearing Regency/Romantic one day, I’d like them to be a little earlier than my 1862 garters so I chose the simple pattern from The Workwoman’s Guide.

1838 Garters

Materials:
about one ball of purple fingering-weight wool (from Knit Picks)

Patterns:
I used the pattern from The Workwoman’s Guide by A Lady from 1838. It’s not much of a pattern – knit 2 ¼” by 27” in garter stitch. Repeat.

Construction:
Since these are so completely plain, I was able to practice knitting blind with them. It worked out well, and with half an hour of work a day, I had them finished within several weeks. The only bad thing is that they took a lot more yarn than I expected. I thought I could get them out of what was left over from a friend’s garters and sortie cap, but I was sorely mistaken. There were only a few yards of yarn left after I finished the first garter. I had to order more.

Thoughts after wearing:
These worked just fine. I had no escapee stockings or garters. I wore them wrapped twice around the leg just below the knee.
