The only specific event I have set to sew for is the Battle of San Jacinto in April. I've done most of the underwear and have started on underwear for one of my daughters who wants to go to costume events with me. I need to make her a petticoat and a dress, and I need sleeve supports (or stupid puffers as [livejournal.com profile] mandie_rw calls them) and a dress for myself. I also want a bonnet for myself. I had been planning to get the Miller's Millinery 1819-1834 fashionable bonnet pattern, but I realized a couple of days ago that I bought the Butterick 3805 bonnet pattern several years ago.

The 1830's is not my forte so I thought I'd ask those who have done 1830's more than I what they think of it. Is this a reasonable bonnet shape? The goal is c. 1834-1835 and not terribly fashionable but not drab and poverty-stricken. I can't find any pictures of any bonnets made from this pattern - only reviews of two other views on patternreview.com and a comment on reddawn.net that the bonnet view is probably the best of the views. That's not much.

Any thoughts?

The line drawing looks fine to me but I'd probably tape together a poster board mock up. The angle the brim attaches at is key in my opinion.

Definitely planning to mock it up. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't starting with a worthless pattern.

Agreeing with [livejournal.com profile] sewloud, the shape looks about right, but as it's drawn it's too far forward on the head. Definitely do a test in posterboard and play around with placement too. Also if you plan to do an Apollo's knot or other tall hair, do that while you try out the bonnet mockup, to make sure your hair will fit in the crown and have it sit in the right spot.

Thanks. I would definitely plan to mock it up, but I wanted to make sure it was reasonable before I bothered.

If this one doesn't work, does Timely Tresses have a pattern for this period? I'm skeptical about MM's covering such a wide time period and I know TT does excellent research.

This is a period that Timely Tresses skips. They have options for 1810's and for 1840's but not really the time in between. Lynn McMasters has one for the period, but I don't like it much.

Definitely looks promising! I can't say I've ever seen it made up, either, so I'm curious to see what a mockup will look like.

I was hoping you'd chime in.

I'll be sure to post pictures of the mock-up, but don't expect them too soon. I got my sewing machine back today so I'm ready to go on more underwear!
