I went to a Hallowe’en themed wedding last Saturday and wore my 1910 evening dress. We ended up back and forth between inside and outside a lot so I ended up carrying the train a lot. I’m glad it got another wearing because I do like it quite a bit. I also got to use a fan that I bought at an estate sale a couple of months ago. I had waffled on buying it, but some of the flowers painted on it were an excellent match for this dress so that worked out quite well.

Monday the band parents did a trunk or treat for the kids after practice. It was in the 40’s out so I wanted something warm. I finally wore my 1870’s gray velvet mantle. [personal profile] marianme took pictures of it in Tombstone, but it was really too warm to wear it that day so this was really its first wearing. I also finally wore the 1890’s knit petticoat I started making back when I lived in Virginia and finished in Houston. It took eight years to wear it! I wore my 1890 barrister’s wig knit hood too. That I’ve only had for a couple of years. With all the new stuff I also wore my yellow striped linen 1881 dress again. I do like that dress. Unfortunately I completely failed to get a picture of the whole look.

Tuesday it was 7:00 by the time I got home from dropping the girls at a friend’s house, which was too late to want to start donning a costume so I didn’t end up dressing on Hallowe’en itself.

This year was disrupted by an unexpected job change and relocation back to the area that I grew up in. Up until June I was working on needlework as usual, and I started a cross-stitched picture in July, but it didn’t move very quickly as we got the house ready to sell, moved to DFW, and started dealing with all the issues that you’re bound to find moving into a new house. I didn’t end up making my new favorite thing this year, but I enjoyed most of what I made.

It was still a sparse year for events. There was an outing in Phoenix, a whirlwind trip to San Jose, and Costume College. I had intended to go to two DFWCG events, but I had a houseguest for the Georgian picnic and the Christmas event was canceled due to rain. Here’s hoping next year I can start attending their events.

This year’s projects behind the cut )

One of my goals for this year was to work from my stash. I was very successful. I bought the buckram and flannel for my 17th century petticoat, the marine vinyl for my husband’s welder cover, the “Cardinal Joy” cross-stitch kit, and the fabrics for my son’s Hallowe’en costume. My mother-in-law bought the fabrics for her blouse. Everything else came from the stash. Since I didn’t do a lot of sewing, my fabric stash didn’t decrease very much, but at least I didn’t add anything to it. I did decrease my yarn stash a little more significantly, though I’m trying not to even have a yarn stash. It’s mostly leftovers from projects where I had too much and some things that I bought in 2021 with specific projects in mind and just got a little too optimistic about what I could finish in a year.

I realized a week or two ago that I had never posted a few things from earlier this year. As so often happens at the end of the year, I am now trying to get caught up on posting finished projects.

This dress was the only thing I made specifically for Costume College this year. It's a 1910's evening dress made of ivory silk/cotton faille, blue silk georgette, and black silk net. The bodice is based on one in Patterns of Fashion, and the net and georgette skirts are from the same pattern. The faille skirt is from the Wearing History Cordelia skirt pattern. It's worn over combinations, a 1910's corset, and a princess petticoat. The ivory layer is mostly machine-sewn, but the georgette and net layers were done by hand because I'm not adept enough with machine-sewing wiggly fabrics. The net layer is weighted with the leaded cord drapery weight you can get a JoAnn's, and it worked beautifully for the purpose. I've had the flower that I put at the waist since I was in high school and wore it in my hair when I was a dancer in a production of It's a Grand Night for Singing. It was fun to finally have a use for it after twenty-odd years.

I've worked on three projects this week.

I'm through five repeats plus five rows of the pattern at the hem of the 1930's tunic. Only 27 rows to go to finish the body. Then I want to reknit the patterned section of one of the sleeves because I made several mistakes in it before I really got the pattern down.

Since the tunic stopped being a good blind knitting project a week or so ago, I started a new pair of 17th/18th century stockings. I had hoped to use the pattern from The Typical Tudor, but now the publication date is expected to be in October. I didn't want to wait until then to start them since I really only had the one set of yarn for plain knitting on hand. I bought it last summer when the book was supposed to be published in October 2021.

I made some progress on my 1910's evening dress. I finished the ivory layer and started the blue layer. The bodice part of the blue layer is done, and the skirt seams are sewn. After I press the seams, I'll attach it to the waistband and then let it hang before hemming. I've cut and seamed the skirt for the black net layer, but I'm going to do the hem on it before I mount it to the waistband. I can level it from the top.

I'm working on the early 1910's evening dress I started a couple of weeks ago. It's starting to look like a dress, though the skirt and bodice are only pinned together.

This is only the first layer. There's still a blue georgette layer and then a black net layer still to go.

I've started a new project. It's an early 1910's evening dress more or less based on this one from the Museo del Traje in Madrid. Unfortunately, I can't find a picture of the back so I'll be making that part up as I go.

So far I'm working on the ivory bodice. It just needs darts and bones and to have the sleeves set to finish that piece. Then maybe I'll start tackling the skirt.
