I got marianme to take pictures of my new stockings this weekend.





I kind of hate them. They're a little hard to get over the heel just because cotton doesn't stretch as much as wool does. Whenever I went downstairs, my boots rubbing the back of the legs would pull them down just a little so that I'd end up with a wrinkle under my heel. Walking on a wrinkle is not comfortable. It's also not easy pulling socks back up when wearing boots. I am happy enough with the foot, though I had thought I'd have more length in the foot based on my first try-on where I ended up ripping back an inch. Go figure; knitting is squirmy.

So now I have a definite second-class pair of stockings. That makes two pair of cotton stockings I've made (one plain and one patterned), and they're my least favorite pairs out of all the stockings I've made. These weren't even fun to make. If I say I'm going to make another pair of cotton stockings, someone please talk me out of it!

But they're soooo pretty! (As are the garters). Oh well, at least you got some cute photos.

Thank you. And I used a couple of skeins of cotton and kept my hands occupied for many hours.

Aw man, it sucks that they're not right. They look gorgeous (although that doesn't help their fit, of course)

My cotton stockings got wet with salt water from making ice cream in Williamsburg. I thought I was going to have to cut them off! A friend pulled and I held on to the edge of the bed and they thankfully came off!

They're beautiful though! But cotton...

I remember that and thought of it when we were talking about doing Victorian bathing dresses by the sea.

Definitely wool for the sea! I'm sure sea water would've required cutting off. Wool is amazing!

I’m thinking store-bought cotton socks for the sea. I’m not sure I want to risk my hand-knit wool ones. At least not the tiny gauge ones. The 20’s ones will be fine.

My 20s hand knit were fine. Sport weight on 1.5, I think? Store bought cotton were obviously fine too! Definitely not tiny gauge hand knit.
