Some Sewing

I started my son’s Hallowe’en costume over the weekend. I made good progress on the two pieces I started. They’re simple, but it was enjoyable to sew again for a bit. Hopefully I’ll do more this weekend. I just don’t have time for much needlework right now.

I did finish the biography of Jackie Robinson I was reading. It was good. That was the last in a whole stack of books my father had loaned me. Now I’m reading the new Patterns of Fashion. It’s lovely, of course. I also started a mystery that is pretty lame to begin with. Maybe it will get better...

The worst mysteries are the ones with surprise endings that had no clues. There are streaming series that are like mysteries. They keep drawing you in because you are trying to figure things out.

I don't know what makes the worst. I read one once with Oscar Wilde as the detective. 200 pages before the end, it was obvious that one of two people was the murderer and that the second was an accomplice to the murder. It took him until 20 pages before the end to work it out or even start questioning what they had told him. That was bad. This one just is weird - someone keeps trying to run her over with a car and someone keeps breaking into either her house or her shop without necessarily taking anything or causing any serious damage. Now there's a dead person, and they've arrested someone for the murder even though three separate people have made statements that there wasn't time for it. I'm only a quarter of the way into it, but so far I wouldn't buy the next one in the series. It was a free book, so maybe I'm just getting what I paid for.

Yikes. Figuring out the mystery with 200 pages to go does not sound like much of a mystery except for the oblivious detective.
