1908 German Skating Cap
Jan. 10th, 2024 05:56 pmI made a skating cap from a pattern published in 1908 to wear to the DFWCG ice skating outing last Saturday. It was the only thing I made for the outing. It was great to finally wear my 1907/08 sweater for an event as well as my rose wool skirt. (I did wear the sweater and skirt for a kid's costume birthday party six years ago, but that doesn't really count as a costume event.)
I misremembered the pattern when I made it and made three-row ribs instead of four-row ribs so it was no wonder that it came out too small. The extra that I knit was still a bit short of what the pattern called for so my cap is definitely tighter than the pattern calls for. You can see it in the comparison of the pattern image and my pictures. I've since pressed it, trying to relax the ribs some, but I haven't tried it on again since. The probability of me taking a second set of pictures is vanishingly small so here are the pictures without pressing.

It worked a little better for me if I turned up a bit at the bottom. I also stuck a couple of bobby pins in the front to try to keep it well on my head, but as you can see from the pictures, it was determined to slide backward.
I think the giant pom-pom on top is ridiculous but rather cute. I don't think I'll wear it in real life, but if there's another skating outing, I would absolutely wear it again.
