I finished a velvet 1870's mantle in time for Helldorado Days in October, and [personal profile] marianme took pictures of it.

The pattern was from Period Costume for Stage and Screen, and the original that the pattern is based on is dated to c. 1873.

It's cotton velvet with a rayon braid trim. The facings are cotton broadcloth. I can't say much about wearing it because it was warm enough at that I took it off after taking pictures. The collar wanted to stick up in back so I'm going to tack it down. I think it would have pressed into place nicely if I had dared press it, but I didn't want to risk flattening the pile in a place where it might be seen in the roll of the collar.

The mantle is pretty but I want to know more about your bonnet.

Oooh looks great! With the cold weather, my mind runs to velvet. This is a lovely winter wardrobe addtition.

Hurrah, velvet mantua. Looks so good. It’s almost cool enough to wear one here. Dang, climate change.
