For the band banquet in the spring, the kids wear formal dresses. It's basically band prom. One of my daughters found a simple dress that she liked at the store. (Bonus: It's long and black so it also works for concert black if they're not wearing their actual concert dresses.) My other daughter wanted me to make her something. I pulled out the pattern from my first formal dress when I was in high school. I raised the back a little and cut the hem short in front, per her request. I really liked the dress when I had it, and she liked her version. It may be a bit dated, but I think it's more classic lines than hopelessly out of style.

The fabric is a polyester satin from JoAnn's with an embroidered net overlay on the bodice, also from JoAnn's. I had remembered JoAnn's having a lot of special occasion fabrics, but I guess they've cut down their selection on those too.

The dress has a very classic look to it, but then I have an older eye as well. Satin and satin skirts are kind of in right now. Nice fit.

I agree on classic look, it works for a pre/teen and they look happy <3

Man, I never got a band prom in school, I am envious!

That sounds WAY better than a real prom to me.
